Privacy Notice

Short version: no account, no files read, scan results stay in your browser, and we never sell your personal information. The only things that reach our server are an optional AI review request (if you ask for it) and an optional feedback form.

Who we are

Computer Advisor (mycomputeradvisor.com) and its related software, including the Windows scanner, are owned and operated by Dizkaver LLC, a California-registered limited liability company (“we”, “us”). Questions about this notice: see the contact page.

The Windows scanner: what it reads

The scanner (ComputerAdvisorScan.exe) runs only when you start it and only after you allow it (it asks “Allow this one-time check?”). It reads standard Windows hardware and system information:

What the scanner never reads or sends

The scanner installs nothing, doesn't keep running and doesn't connect to the internet itself. When it finishes it opens your browser at our website with the results attached.

The Mac scanner (beta): what it reads

The Mac scanner (mac-scan.sh, also in ComputerAdvisorScan-Mac.zip) is new and in beta. Like the Windows scanner, it runs only when you start it and only after you allow it. It uses Apple's built-in tools to read: the model name and whether it's a laptop or desktop; the macOS name, version and build; processor name and cores; memory size and type; graphics; each drive's type, size and macOS's health status; free and total space on the startup volume (shown as “Mac HD”) and other drives (shown as “Drive 2…”); battery capacity, cycle count and condition; and uptime.

It never reads or sends your files or file names, your user name, computer name, serial numbers, hardware IDs or the names of your drives. It needs no admin password, installs nothing and leaves nothing running. Like the Windows scanner, it doesn't upload anything — it opens your results in a link to this site.

How scan results travel

The results are placed in the part of the web address after the # sign (for example /#scan=…). Browsers don't send that part to any web server, so the results are read only by the page in your browser, and the page removes them from the address bar. We don't store your scan on our server. Your answers to our quick questions also stay in your browser tab.

Optional AI review (xAI)

Only if you request the AI review, the page sends our server a short summary — the hardware details above (without the scan time or code), your three quick answers and our draft recommendations. Our server passes it to xAI (the maker of Grok) to write a plain-English explanation and returns the answer to you. We don't keep a copy. xAI processes that request under its own terms and privacy policy. If you don't request it, nothing goes to xAI.

Feedback questionnaire

After a report you may see a short, optional questionnaire. If you press Send feedback, we save on our server (in private cloud storage provided by our host, Vercel):

We don't save your scan, IP address or device details with your feedback. To limit spam, our server briefly keeps a scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address in memory for about 10 minutes; it's never written to storage. If you press Skip, nothing is sent. Either way, your browser remembers that you've seen the form so it isn't shown again.

Beta testers

If you tick “I am a tester — free for testers” and enter your email, we save your email address, the date and time, and where you signed up (home page or report) in the same private cloud storage. We use it only to run the beta: to ask for your short (about three-minute) review or suggestion and to reply to you. We don't use it for marketing and never sell it. Your browser also remembers that you're a tester (in its local storage) so your full report stays unlocked; you can remove that with the “Not you? Remove” link. To have your sign-up deleted from our server, contact us. Locked report sections are hidden in your browser only during the beta — your scan is not sent to us to unlock them.

Downloading or emailing your report

Download PDF builds the PDF entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to us. Anyone can download or email their report; if part of your report is locked, the PDF and email include only the parts you can see.

If you use “Email me my report”, the report text and the address you type are sent from your browser to our server and passed to our email provider (Resend) to deliver that one email. We don't store the report or the address, and we don't log their contents; to limit abuse, our server briefly keeps a hashed version of your IP address and of the recipient address in memory to count sends. If email sending isn't switched on yet, nothing is sent: the page offers Print / Save as PDF, or opens your own email app with a short summary.

Free test phase — no payment taken

The “Review + recommendations” service is free during our test phase. We don't collect payment or card details anywhere on this site. If paid services start later, we'll update this notice and our Terms of Use before charging anyone.

Cookies and retailer (affiliate) cookies

Computer Advisor itself doesn't set cookies and doesn't use advertising or analytics trackers. Your browser's local storage remembers small settings, such as whether you've answered the feedback form. Like every website host, Vercel keeps standard technical logs (such as IP address, time and page requested) to run and secure the service.

Some product links go to Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy and Micro Center. When affiliate tracking is on for a store, clicking its link may let that store or its affiliate network set cookies so the sale can be credited to us — Amazon (Amazon Associates), Newegg (Rakuten Advertising) and Best Buy (Impact). Those cookies are set by those companies on their own sites under their own privacy policies; you can block or delete them in your browser. See our affiliate disclosure. When a page shows a live price, our server asks the store's official data service using the product ID only — nothing about you.

We don't sell or share your personal information

We do not sell personal information and do not “share” it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as those terms are defined in California law. We use service providers only to run the site (Vercel for hosting and storage; xAI only for AI reviews you request).

California residents' rights

If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended, gives you the right to:

To make a request, use our contact page. Because we don't have accounts, it helps to include the email address you gave in the feedback form and roughly when you sent it. We'll confirm the request and answer within the time the law requires (normally 45 days).

How long we keep information

Children

This site is meant for adults choosing computer repairs and parts. It isn't directed to children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child sent us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Security

The site uses HTTPS, feedback is kept in private storage that only we can read, and the admin view is protected by a secret key. No method is perfect, so please don't put passwords or serial numbers in the feedback form.

Changes to this notice

If this notice changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be noted on the site.
